Extension Activities

One of the strengths of PPGCAT is its social insertion, through assistance and outreach activities in the community, developed by its permanent faculty and collaborators. In terms of technological and economic impact, the program has carried out important researches aimed at meeting the demands of society, especially in the northeastern region of Brazil. Some of these are listed below.

The Outubro Rosa Pet Bahia provides the extension service, under the coordination of Dr. Alessandra Estrela Lima (permanent professor of the program), allowing the integration of the community, high school students, undergraduate, graduate, residents, liberal professionals, veterinary technicians of HOSPMEV/UFBA and PPGCAT Professors. The event promotes free clinical care of dogs and cats with breast tumors destined to the entire soteropolitan community, especially to the population with lower purchasing power, with the exercise of their owners' awareness of the risk factors and need for prevention. It is considered an event of technical cultural and scientific character, with national coverage, which takes place annually throughout the month of October and has the participation of public and private institutions related to veterinary medicine and Animal welfare.

The Symposium on Veterinary Surgery and ophthalmology, under the coordination of Dr. Arianne Pontes Oriá, was created with the objective of disseminating knowledge related to orthopedic and soft tissue surgery and knowledge about the veterinary ophthalmology had as participants of the EMVZ-UFBA, PPGCAT and physicians Veterinary.

The extension program under development in the microregion of Feira de Santana with the rural community of small producers of milk, coordinated by Dr. Maria Consuêlo Caribé Ayre, develops together with undergraduate and graduate students aiming to transfer technologies for good practices in milk production for small producers. This project has a multidisciplinary character and is accomplished with the participation of professors with specialties in different areas of veterinary medicine and zootechnics (clinical, Animal Health prevention, reproduction, parasitic diseases and food technology ), ACCOBA technicians, undergraduate, graduate and higher level technicians who perform activities in the diagnostic laboratories of the veterinary medicine Hospital.

  • Consolidation of a multidisciplinary research network for the development and improvement of surveillance and control methods of Lutzomyia Longipalpis, a vector of visceral leishmaniasis in the state of Bahia;
  • Creation of the multiuser laboratory percent of applied Biotechnology (CLaMBiotec).

Dr. ANTONIO DE LISBOA RIBEIRO FILHO 

  • New strategies to improve the rates of IATF in cattle in the Semiarid region of Bahia.

Dr. ARISTEU VIEIRA DA SILVA 

  • Prevalence and risk factors for Toxoplasma gondii and enteroparasites infections in dogs and humans of a rural community in the state of Bahia, Brazil;
  • Zoonotic agents in wild animals and associated vectors in the state of Bahia.

Dr. CARLOS ROBERTO FRANKE

  • Analysis of the implementation of the national program for the control of rabies and the perception of the population about the procedures for prevention and prophylaxis of rabies involving Chiroptera in the Salvador city, Bahia.

Dr. JOÃO MOREIRA DA COSTA NETO 

  • Evaluation of alternative methods for teaching the surgical technique
  • Development of alternative methods for the use of animals for teaching in the medical area and veterinary medicine

  • Detection and molecular characterization of Toxoplasma gondii in terrestrial and marine animals, and its interface with man.

  • Genetic improvement of Santa Inês sheep in the state of Bahia.

  • Toxic plants for ruminants in the Recôncavo region of Bahia.

  • Nucleus of bioprospecting of drugs derived from plants of the state of Bahia for the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases;
  • Bahian Network for bioproducts Prospecting for the treatment of CNS pathologies Bioneuro-ba.

Some professors of the program have dedication to carry out projects with educational focus, in order to contribute to the improvement of primary, secondary, undergraduate, technical/professional and for the development of innovative teaching proposals.

  • Education, environment and public Health: an interdisciplinary proposal to promote quality in human-animal interaction and environmental conservation;
  • Sanitary education: A diagnostic and educational approach of zoonoses and human-animal-environment interaction in Salvador, Bahia.

  • Discovering Science by Parasitology;

Dr. CARLOS ROBERTO FRANKE 

  • Implementation and coordination of video library Saúde/icict/Fiocruz in the system of libraries/Central Library Rector Macedo Costa, Campus of Ondina/UFBA;
  • Implantation and availability of molecular diagnosis in animal reservoirs of rabies virus in the state of Bahia;
  • The scientific documentary and the Reflection on health and environment in contemporaneity.
